Born into a notable and learned family (Aryanpour from his mother’s side and Mashayakhi from the father’s side), Mehrdad came to the United States in 1972 and received his PhD from American University in Washington, D.C. at a very young age. Mehrdad has been teaching sociology at different institutions in the Washington area, (among them at Georgetown University) for nearly three decades and has been a mentor to many students, Iranian Americans as well as Americans.
Mehrdad has also been politically active for as long as we know him. He joined the student movement prior to the Revolution and is a founding member of the Jomhorukhahan Party (Iranians for a Secular Democracy).
His written work combines scholarship with activism. In 1992, he co-edited a book with the late Samih Farsoun called, Political Culture in the Islamic Republic, published by Routledge. Mehrdad Mashayekhi was born in Tehran, Iran and has resided in the U.S. since 1972. He received a. B.A. and M.A. in economics (Case Western Reserve University, 1976, Cleveland, and The American University, 1979, Washington D.C.), and a Ph.D. in Sociology from The American University, in 1986.
Mashayekhi is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Georgetown University. He joined the Department of Sociology and Anthropology in 1989 and has alternately taught as adjunct and visiting positions.
His courses include: Introduction to Sociology, Political Sociology, Globalization and Social Change in Developing Countries, Social Inequality, Social Movements, Politics and Culture in Postrevolutionary Iran, and Sociology of Democratization and Authoritarianism.

It is with deep sadness that we have learned of the passing of our distinguished friend and colleague, the Iranian-American sociologist Dr. Mehrdad Mashayekhi. A prominent political analyst and public intellectual, Mehrdad Mashayekhi died Wednesday October 5, 2011, at his home in Vienna, Virginia.
Dr. Mashayekhi was born in 1953 in Tehran and had lived in the U.S. since 1972. He received his B.A in economics from Case Western Reserve University (1976) and Ph.D in sociology from the American University (1979).
Dr. Mashayekhi was a visiting assistant professor of sociology at Georgetown University and University of Maryland, teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses on political sociology, globalization, social change and development, social inequality, social movements, and the process of democratization in the Middle East. In the past, he also taught at George Mason University and St. Mary's College of Maryland.
