The Power of Propaganda

We're surrounded by propaganda all the time: some of it benign, some of it dangerous. Propaganda was used to devastating effect during the Holocaust and it's worth studying to understand why and how we are vulnerable to propaganda in our everyday lives. Beginning this month, the Museum's State of Deception exhibition on the power of Nazi propaganda will travel the country. Our podcast today is part of that exhibition—a collage of people, young and old, discussing their own relationship to propaganda, and the ways in which they guard against it.

Despite political controversies during the First World War, there had been little recrimination between Turkey and Germany after defeat in 1918. Whatever emotional hostility remained in both countries was directed against the victorious Allied powers which imposed humiliating peace terms upon the vanquished. Under these circumstances it was not difficult for the Weimar Republic to regain the friendship and confidence of Turkey.

The period between the conclusion of the Montreux Straits Convention of 20 July 1936 and the outbreak of the Second World War on 1 September 1939 witnessed some momentous developments in the position and policy of Turkey and in Turkish relations with Germany. Berlin was much displeased with the new regime of the Straits and looked unfavourably upon the possibility of Soviet naval forces in the Mediterranean. It was also disturbed by the ever-growing Anglo-French influence in Turkey, which might prove a limiting factor with respect to Nazi ambitions both in southeaste
