Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory formed Goldfrapp in 1999 and released their Mercury Prize nominated debut album ‘Felt Mountain’ in 2000.  Since that time, they have released a further five studio albums, most recently 'Silver Eye' in 2017, and scored a string of hits including 'Strict Machine', 'Ooh La La', 'Lovely Head' and 'A&E'. The multi-platinum selling band have been nominated for several Grammy and Brit Awards and won an Ivor Novello for 'Strict Machine'. Goldfrapp have also scored the soundtracks to the films 'My Summer of Love' and 'Nowhere Boy' and wrote the music for the National Theater’s production of ‘Medea’ directed by Carrie Cracknell in 2014.

Goldfrapp is an electronic music duo, formed in 1999 in London, England, and made up of Alison Goldfrapp (vocals, songwriter) and Will Gregory (songwriter, producer). Goldfrapp's musical style has changed over time, from a cinematic ambient sound, through electropop, a glam rock influenced sound, folktronica to 80's synthpop.

The majority of the band's songs are composed by Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory, although they have collaborated with session musician Nick Batt several times. They have called their writing sessions a "democratic affair", playing off one another while in the recording studio. While writing, Alison uses her vocals to create melodies and drumbeats. Will composes his music on vintage keyboards, interpreting the mood of Goldfrapp's lyrics.

Early life[]

Alison Goldfrapp was born in the London suburb of Enfield, the youngest of six children. The surname of Goldfrapp is of German origin from her father, Nick, who was an 'eccentric, romantic' man from an upper-middle-class family who had been forced to join the Army as an officer straight from school. When he married Alison's mother, a working-class nurse called Isabella but known as Pat, the family ostracised him for years. He left the Army and ended up working for the Spastics Society and English Heritage, writing and painting in his spare time. The family moved around a lot, living in cities and on farms and 'lots of different places', before moving to Alton in Hampshire when Alison was small.
