Source: UGA hires Cal's Danna Durante as next Gym Dogs coach

Georgia went well outside the familiar territory of the Southeast to find its next gymnastics coach.

Georgia will name California coach and former Nebraska assistant Danna Durante to head the 10-time national champion Gym Dogs, a Georgia source said on Saturday.

Durante was a longtime assistant at Nebraska before being named the head coach at Cal last year. According to her Cal biography, Durante is a native of Tulsa, Okla. and graduated from Arizona State in 1995. Durante replaces Jay Clark who resigned two weeks ago.

The hiring should be announced next week, the source said.

"I can't comment on personnel matters," Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said on Saturday.

Durante made her name as an assistant with 19-year Nebraska women's coach Dan Kendig. She was named national assistant coach of the year in 2007 and helped 11 Cornhuskers earn 23 all-America honors in her nine seasons at Nebraska. Durante was on the staff when Nebraska finished fourth at

Prior to joining the team at NBC10, Deanna was a reporter in Hastings, Nebraska; Little Rock, Arkansas; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She graduated from Syracuse University from the Newhouse School. Deanna has won three Mid-Atlantic Emmy awards for reporting in the Philadelphia region. She has also won several Associated Press Awards and is a recipient of a Milwaukee Press Club Award.

She enjoys giving back to the community. Every year she rides in the “Irish Pub Tour de Shore,” where she rides a bike from Philadelphia to Atlantic City to raise money for local charities.
