Coming to prominence in the 1950s, American artist Al Held was a painter, working in the abstract expressionist and geometric styles. An art student in Paris and New York, he began his creative life in the Big Apple and worked there for many years. And although he was a part of these contemporary art movements, his work was unique and often deviated from the standard characteristics of these forms. The originality in his work came from his explorations of three-dimensional space, using colour and texture to express his meaning.

Bold colours and layers of paint meant his pieces seemed to pop out from the surface into the space in front of the canvas. He moved from the use of simple black and white abstract forms to brightly coloured geometric shapes with clean, sharp lines. Despite this aspect of precision, Held stated that the message behind his work was about finding a way to live with the chaos and complexity inherent in human existence. He was well-regarded in his lifetime and was awarded many honours, including artist in reside

Al Held was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1928. After a two-year term in the U.S. Navy beginning in 1945, Held enrolled at the Art Students League in New York. In 1949, using the support of the G.I. Bill, he went to Paris for three years to study at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. In Paris, he decided that realism was not for him, and moved into abstraction. A long association with the Andre Emmerich Gallery began in 1965. In 1974 he had a midcareer survey at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Beginning in 1981, he spent a part of every year in Tuscany, where he established a second home and studio. His works of the 1980s, with their interlocking arcs, arabesques, and circular forms, reflect the influence of Italian Renaissance and baroque architecture.

In his last years, Held worked on vast, dramatic compositions in which geometric shapes are enmeshed in a mystical, labyrinthine, deep space that rushes to a distant horizon. Held was appointed associate professor of art at Yale University in 1962 and taught there until 1980. A museum sh

Al Held (October 12, 1928 – July 27, 2005) was an American Abstract expressionist painter. He was particularly well known for his large scale Hard-edge paintings. As an artist, multiple stylistic changes occurred throughout his career, however, none of these occurred at the same time as any popular emerging style or acted against a particular art form. In the 1950s his style reflected the abstract expressionist tone and then transitioned to a geometric style in the 60s. During the 1980s there was a shift into acrylic painting that emphasized bright geometric space that’s deepness reflected infinity. From 1962 to 1980 he was a professor of art at Yale University.

Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1928, he grew up in the East Bronx, the son of a poor Jewish family thrown onto welfare during the depression. Held showed no interest in art until leaving the Navy in 1947. Inspired by his friend Nicholas Krushenick, Held enrolled in the Art Students League of New York. He originally thought about studying in Mexico under the prominent muralist David Siqueiro
