Charles Henry Goren, probably the most famous bridge player and writer about bridge of all time and the Tribune`s bridge columnist for many years, died April 3 of a heart attack in his home in Encino, Cal., it was learned Thursday. He was 90.

Mr. Goren, who has been variously called ”Mr. Bridge,” ”the grand mahatma of big time bridge,” and a superstar, took bridge to its peak of popularity during the 1940s, `50s, and `60s. He attained a celebrityhood usually reserved in the U.S. for sports heroes and movie stars.

He appeared on the cover of Time Magazine as ”The King of Aces,” and persuaded the editors of Sports Illustrated that contract bridge, a card game, was a sport. He became a weekly columnist for Sports Illustrated and also wrote a monthly column for McCall`s.

He wrote the Tribune`s bridge column from 1944 until 1970 when film star and bridge expert Omar Sharif joined him as co-author.

In 1989, the Tribune column was renamed ”Goren Bridge with Omar Sharif and Tannah Hirsch,” and will continue to run this way.
