After 6 weeks of rollercoaster negotiations, twists, turns, accusations, cheap shots, name calling and a partridge in a pear tree, Croatian President Kolinda Grabar Kitarović finally designated Tihomir Orešković, former pharmaceutical executive, to become the new Croatian Prime Minister on December 23, 2015.

“I have concluded the last round of consultations. At the very end of this process, Mr Orešković convinced me that he has the support of 78 parliamentary deputies and proved it with their signatures. Therefore, in accordance with my constitutional duty, I hereby give him the mandate to constitute the new Government. Tihomir Orešković (* 1. Januar1966[1] in Zagreb, Jugoslawien) ist ein kroatisch-kanadischer Manager und Politiker. Von Januar bis Oktober 2016 war er Ministerpräsident Kroatiens.

Leben und beruflicher Werdegang

Oreškovićs Eltern wanderten anderthalb Jahre nach seiner Geburt nach Ontario in Kanada aus, wo er an der McMaster UniversityChemie studierte und dort 1991 einen Master of Business Administration erwarb. Er arbeitete ab 1992 im Finanzbereich von Eli Lilly und wechselte später zu Novopharm in Kanada, das heute zu Teva Pharmaceutical Industries gehört. Als das israelische Unternehmen 2008 den kroatischen Arzneihersteller Pliva kaufte, war er dort Bereichsleiter für Osteuropa; nun wurde er bei Pliva Vorstandschef. Ab 2014 war Orešković Teva-Chef für Europa und Nahost und lebte mit seiner Familie in Amsterdam.[2][3] Nach seiner Tätigkeit als kroatischer Ministerpräsident arbeitete er zeitweise erneut für Teva. Seit 2018 ist er Geschäftsführer der Xantis Pharma AG (Schweiz).[4]

New Croatian government approved by parliament

The Croatian parliament late on Friday evening gave a vote of confidence to the government led by Prime Minister-Designate Tihomir Oreskovic.

Oreskovic, born in Zagreb in 1966, graduated in chemistry at McMaster University in Canada and obtained an MBA in finance and information systems in 1991. He began his career at the Eli Lilly drugs company in Canada in 1992, where he held various positions in financing and international business. Before leaving the company, he was a director for relations with the state administration and economic affairs. Oreskovic continued his career in Canada at Novopharm, now a member of the Teva Group, as a vice president in charge of business development and specialty products as well as chief financial officer.
 

He joined Croatia's Pliva in 2009 as the CFO for East Europe. In 2010 he was appointed CFO for the East Europe, Mediterranean, Israel and Africa region. In 2012 he was appointed management board chairman and ran Pliva's business in Southeast Europe.
