John Marvin Perkins (born September 11, 1959) is an American actor who portrayed Sol Star on HBO's Deadwood, and later reprised his role in Deadwood: The Movie.

Biography[]

John Hawkes was born John Marvin Perkins in Alexandria, Minnesota, to Patricia Jeanne (Olson) and Peter John Perkins, a farmer. He is of Scandinavian and British Isles descent. John moved to Austin, Texas to begin his career as an actor and musician. He co-founded the Big State Productions Theatre Company and appeared in the group's original play, "In the West", at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. He took on the stage name "John Hawkes" because another actor shared his birth name, John Perkins.[1]

John starred in the critically-acclaimed, Me and You and Everyone We Know (2005), which received wide praise and was awarded the special jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival, as well as the Camera d'Or Award at the Cannes Film Festival

John Hawkes is an award-winning actor known for crafting memorable performances across a wide range of styles and genres. He will next be seen in the upcoming fourth season of HBO's "True Detective" with Jodie Foster. Previous projects include the indie film "Roving Woman," "The Peanut Butter Falcon" with Shia LaBouf, which won a number of critics' honors as well as being recognized by the National Board of Review and winning the audience award at SXSW, along with Nicholas Winding Refn's crime drama "Too Old to Die Young" which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and boasted an eclectic ensemble cast. Hawkes also reunited with other original cast members for the highly anticipated "Deadwood" reunion movie, reprising his role of 'Sol Star' from the critically lauded HBO series. JOHN HAWKES has been in numerous films and television programs, including "Deadwood","Me and You and Everyone We Know", "HardBall," "Buttleman," "Identity", "The Perfect Storm," "Where's Marlowe?" and "A Slipping Down Life." Hawkes hails from Alexandria, Minnesota and began his career in Austin, Texas. He is also a musician. Hawkes was a member of a punk band in the 80's (1982 - 1986 to be specific) called 'Meat Joy.' He was known as John Boy Perkins in the band. Hawkes continues to be active in the music scene, in his band Gangster Folk, and his new band, King Straggler.

Hawkes was a founding member of Austin's Big State Productions theater company, and has appeared on stage in several productions, including a play he wrote, a one-man show called "Nimrod Soul (1994)," which he performed at L.A.'s Theatre at the Improv.
