Born and raised in the American mid-west, Jeff Smith learned about cartooning from comic strips, comic books, and watching animation on TV. In 1991, he launched a company called Cartoon Books to publish his comic book BONE, a comedy/adventure about three lost cousins from Boneville. Against all odds, the small company flourished, building a reputation for quality stories and artwork. Word of mouth, critical acclaim, and a string of major awards helped propel Cartoon Books and BONE to the forefront of the comic book industry.

Jeff Smith (motorcyclist)
Jeffrey Vincent SmithMBE (born 1934) is an English former professional motorcycle racer.[1] He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 1954 to 1969 as a member of the BSA factory racing team.
His achievements in motorcycle racing include two FIM 500cc Motocross World Championships (1964, 1965), two British Trials Championships, multiple British Experts Trial wins, four individual race wins in the Motocross des Nations, one Scottish Six Days Trial win and eight ISDT Gold Medals.[1][2] In the 1970 New Year Honours, Smith was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to motorcycle racing.[1][3][4]

Born in Colne, Lancashire, England, Smith began in competitions as a trials rider, becoming so successful that he was offered a place on the Norton factory team.[1] After moving to BSA, he won the 1953 and 1954 British Trials Championship.[1] BSA asked Smith to compete in motocross racing which he did with such succe

- Book on the way filmmakers use cognitive biases and heuristics as an aspect of cinematic storytelling, particularly as they concern characterization and viewers’ inferences.
- Book on music in Hollywood films in the 1930s. I trace the history of the classical Hollywood score, its uneven development, its sometimes complicated workflow, its concatenation of popular music and orchestral dramatic cues, and its evolution from a product or pooled labor to a more organic expression of a single composer’s vision.

My research focuses on questions and issues arising from the study of film music/sound, cognitive film theory, and the American film industry. My first book examines the changes in the film industry that aided the development of the film soundtrack album as a vehicle for film and music cross-promotions.
