Creed (band)

American rock band

Creed is an American rock band from Tallahassee, Florida formed in 1994. Creed was prominent in the post-grunge movement of the late 1990s and early 2000s, releasing three consecutive multi-platinum albums; Human Clay (1999), the band's second studio album, received diamond (11× platinum) certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Creed has sold over 28 million records in the United States,[1] has sold over 53 million albums worldwide,[2] and was the ninth best-selling musical act of the 2000s.[3]

For most of its existence, the band has consisted of lead vocalist Scott Stapp, lead guitarist Mark Tremonti, drummer Scott Phillips, and bassist Brian Marshall. Creed's first two studio albums, My Own Prison (1997) and Human Clay (1999), were released to commercial success despite generally unfavorable critical reception; Marshall left the band in 2000. Human Clay contained the Billboard Hot 100 number one single "With Arms Wide Open"—which also won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Son

Creed is vocalist Scott Stapp, guitarist Mark Tremonti, bass player Brian Marshall(former), and drummer Scott Phillips. In the early 1990's, while Scott was studying to be a lawyer at Florida State University, he met up with Mark Tremonti and later dropped out of school to pursue his musical interests. After meeting with Brian Marshall and Scott Phillips, Mark and Scott teamed up with them to become "Naked Toddler". After a few years of auditioning and practicing, "Creed" was formed after suggestions by Brian Marshall.

After paying their dues playing long sets of cover songs in Tallahassee bars, Creed began working in their own tunes...but still, they remained close to home. "We never toured," says Tremonti, almost with pride. "We never did the Florida club circuit like all these other bands; we just played once a month at this bar called Floyd's Music Store."

Creed went on to record their debut album "My Own Prison" in a studio in Tallahasee. The record cost $6,000 because they signed under their own record label, Blue Collar Records(later remastered after Creed signed

Creed dominated the late '90s commercial rock scene, selling more than 20 million albums while blending uplifting melodies with an edgy lyrical perspective. While emphatically denying they're a Christian band, they admit to writing about “spiritual experiences.” Inspired by grunge-rockers Pearl Jam and Nirvana, Scott Stapp and Mark Tremonti founded the group in 1995. The songwriting pair recruited the rhythm section of Brian Marshall and Scott Phillips and began performing original material on the local rock scene. Signed by BMG Records' Wind-Up subsidiary, their debut My Own Prison (1997) generated four No. 1 rock radio singles. Their sophomore effort, Human Clay (1999), debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's album chart and has sold more than ten million copies to date, generating three more No. 1 singles in the process. Creed was named Rock Artist of the Year at Billboard's 1998, 1999, and 2000 Music Awards, and in 2000 the writing team of Tremonti and Stapp won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song for the ballad, “With Arms Wide O
