Christine Dwyer Hickey was born in Dublin. Her short stories have won several awards and have been published in various international anthologies and magazines. She is the author of nine novels. Her first play Snow Angels was published by New Island in 2015. Christine's latest novel The Narrow Land was published by Atlantic Books (UK) in March 2019 and is available through Suffolk Libraries. Tatty which was chosen as Dublin's One City One Book title for 2020 is also available to borrow.
Who were your literary influences as you were growing up and when did you first feel you wanted to write?
As a child I was a dedicated Blyton fan and as a result was happy to go off to boarding school when I was ten, like a lamb to the slaughter. I also adored Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan. I was in hospital for 3 months when I was a teenager (in isolation as it happened) and there I learned how to read like an adult and also how to live in my own head. Christine Dwyer Hickey is a novelist and short story writer. Her first collection of short stories, The House on Parkgate Street and Other Dublin Stories (New Island 2013), is now available online and in all good bookshops!
Her previous novel The Cold Eye of Heaven (Atlantic Books UK 2011) won the Irish Novel of the Year 2012 and was nominated for the IMPAC 2013 award. It has recently been optioned by Newgrange Films. The Cold Eye of Heaven was serialised for RTE radio (read by actor Barry McGovern). Her novel Last Train from Liguria (Atlantic UK 2009) was nominated for the Prix L’Européen de Littérature. Her novel Tatty (New Island 2004 and Vintage 2005) was chosen as one of the 50 Irish Books of the Decade, nominated for the Orange Prize and shortlisted for the Hughes & Hughes Irish Novel of the Year Award. The Dublin Trilogy, The Dancer, The Gambler and The Gatemaker (1995-2000) received wide critical acclaim and The Dancer was shortlisted for Irish Novel of the Year in 1995. Christine’s novels have been widely translated.

Christine Dwyer Hickey is one of Ireland’s best-known writers. Often regarded as a ‘Dublin writer,’ her work is set in various locations including London, Italy, New York, Cape Cod and India.
She has published several novels, a short story collection and a full-length play. The Cold Eye of Heaven won the Irish Novel of the Year 2012 and was nominated for the International IMPAC award. Tatty was nominated for The Orange Prize and was listed as one of the 50 Irish Novels of the Decade. Last Train from Liguria was nominated for the Prix L’Européen de Littérature. Her short stories have been published in anthologies and magazines worldwide and have won several awards, most recently the Irish Short Story Award at the Irish Book Awards 2017. Her first play Snow Angels premiered at the Project Arts Centre to wide critical acclaim. Her work has been translated into many European languages and is also available in Arabic.
Her latest novel The Narrow Road set in 1950 Cape Cod and deals with the marriage of Edward and Jo Hopper was published in March 2019 by Atlantic Books (UK)
