Albert Bryan Jr. is the ninth-elected governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands. He is an entrepreneur, non-profit executive, and tireless and compassionate advocate for the economic and political advancement of the people of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
During his first term as governor, Bryan, a former commissioner of the Virgin Islands Department of Labor and Chairman of the Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority Board, is boldly leading the U.S. Virgin Islands through unprecedented economic growth and infrastructure expansion. In addition, his administration spearheads a multi-billion-dollar recovery and rebuilding effort to transform the territory’s critical infrastructure in the aftermath of hurricanes Irma and Maria.
In collaboration with the 34th Legislature of the Virgin Islands, Governor Bryan developed and implemented a plan that has placed the Government Employees Retirement System, one of the country’s most underfunded public pension systems, on a path to solvency after more than 30 years of underinvestment. Early Years
Albert Vickers Bryan was born on July 23, 1899, in Alexandria, the son of Marion Beach Bryan and Albert Bryan, a bank cashier who served on the Alexandria city council and was active in the Democratic Party. He graduated from Alexandria’s public high school, attended the University of Virginia, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and received his law degree in 1921. Returning to Alexandria to practice law, Bryan married Marie Elizabeth Gasson on December 1, 1923. They had two sons.
While he was a young attorney Bryan made important political connections. His law partner was the namesake son of Howard W. Smith, who in 1930 began a thirty-six-year tenure in the House of Representatives. Like the elder Smith, Bryan became a loyal supporter of Harry F. Byrd Sr., who was then the new leader of the Byrd Organization the dominant faction of the Democratic Party in Virginia. Bryan served as the Alexandria city attorney from 1926 to 1928, when he was appointed and subsequently elected commonwealth’s attorney. He practiced law and served as commonwealth’

Albert Bryan Jr. (born February 21, 1968) is an American politician and businessman, serving as the ninth governor of the United States Virgin Islands since 2019. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as Commissioner for Department of Labor from 2007 to 2015.
Early life and education
Bryan was born on the island of St. Thomas, to Albert Sr. and Genevieve (Pilgrim) Bryan, the oldest of five sons. He grew up in the Savan neighborhood of Charlotte Amalie, the territory's capital. As a teenager, Bryan moved to St. Croix, where he graduated from St. Dunstan's Episcopal High School in 1985. Bryan earned his Bachelor of Arts in economics from Wittenberg University in 1989. He received a Master of Business Administration from the University of the Virgin Islands in 2003.[1]
Career
In 2007, Governor John de Jongh appointed Bryan as Commissioner of the Virgin Islands Department of Labor. When de Jongh's term ended in 2015, he returned to
