Alexandra Mirai (Arabic: الكسندرا ميراي; born 23 August 1974), known professionally as Lexi Alexander, is a German-Palestinian[1] filmmaker and martial artist. A former competitor in karate-point fighting and kickboxing,[3] Alexander entered the film industry as a stunt performer, before earning an Academy Award nomination for her debut short film Johnny Flynton (2002). She subsequently directed Green Street (2005), a crime drama about British football hooliganism, and Punisher: War Zone (2008), an adaptation of the Marvel Comicscharacter of the same name.

Early life and education

Alexander was born Alexandra Mirai in Mannheim, Germany, to a German mother and a Palestinian father.[4] She grew up in Mannheim.[5] Alexander's father was born and raised in Ramallah, Palestine.

As a teenager, Alexander was a member of Mannheim City Boys, a soccer hooligan group, which was part of the inspiration for Green Street Hooligans.[5][7][8]

Born in Germany, to a Palestinian father and German mother, Lexi Alexander, a former World Kickboxing Champion and USMC close-quarter-combat instructor, worked her way up from stunt woman to Oscar-nominated director with her first short film Johnny Flynton, a drama about a boxer. Eager to learn a common language with actors, Lexi studied at the Piero Dusa Acting Conservatory before helming feature films including the SXSW Jury & Audience Award winning drama Green Street Hooligans, Marvel's Punisher: War Zone and Lifted. She directed episodes for TV shows such as ARROW, SUPERGIRL, SWAT and AMERICAN GOTHIC and has recently sold a movie to Blumhouse Productions & Netflix International. Lexi continues to be an avid martial artist and is currently a passionate student of the Russian style Systema.

Biography

German-born director Lexi Alexander first starting working in American film as a stuntwoman, a role which utilized her background as a world-class martial artist. She soon transitioned to writing and directing, though, and made the film "Johnny Flynton" in 2002, a tragic drama about a boxer with a bad temper which was nominated for Best Short Film at the 2003 Academy Awards. After this success, Alexander's next project was the 2005 sports drama "Green Street Hooligans," which she co-wrote and directed. The movie, which garnered a number of film festival awards, follows Matt (Elijah Wood), an American who moves to London and becomes involved with a gang of violent soccer hooligans. Next, Alexander was tapped to direct the new incarnation of the Punisher, a Marvel Comics anti-hero who was the subject of two previous movies, neither of which succeeded in turning the iconic character into a film franchise.
