American victim of wrongful conviction
Glynn Ray Simmons is an American man who was wrongfully convicted in the U.S. state of Oklahoma in 1975 of the 1974 murder of Carolyn Sue Rogers.[1] After having been exonerated, he was released from prison in 2023 at the age of 70, after having been imprisoned for 48 years.[2][3]
His imprisonment after wrongful conviction is believed to be the longest in American history.[3][4]
Criminal case
On December 30, 1974, two armed men robbed a liquor store in Edmond, Oklahoma and, as 30-year-old Carolyn Sue Rogers, a store clerk, picked up the telephone, one of the robbers shot her in the head and killed her. A customer, 18-year-old Belinda Brown, was also shot in the head, but survived.
During the investigation of this crime, police were also investigating a series of other similar robberies and a murder. On February 4, 1975, the bodies of two men were found in a rural area near Oklahoma City. On February 5, Leonard Patterson was arrested, and then confessed to the

Glenn Reuben Simmons was a Dallas human resources executive and consultant who teamed with his brother Harold C. Simmons in an array of successful investments.
Simmons was heavily involved in the management and operation of the companies that his brother invested in.
Simmons, 85, died Wednesday of a heart attack in Las Vegas, where he was attending a board meeting.
A memorial will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Dallas, where he was a longtime leader.

Simmons “was a wonderful Christian man,” said his daughter, D’Andra Simmons of Dallas. “Everybody who knew my dad loved my dad.”
Her father mentored many young people he met during his long business career, she added.

Born in the East Texas town of Golden, Simmons attended East Texas State Teachers College, now Texas A&M-Commerce, before he served in the Army for about two years near the end of World War II. After completing his military service, he returned to Commerce and completed his degree in physics and mathematics,

On August 14, the Associated Press reported that the city of Edmond, Oklahoma agreed to pay $7.15 million to Glynn Simmons, the longest-incarcerated innocent person in the United States. Mr. Simmons spent 48 years in prison, including two years on death row, before he was released last July. Mr. Simmons was officially exonerated by a judge in December 2023 and received $175,000 from the state of Oklahoma, the maximum amount allowed for wrongful convictions under state law. Officials have known since before Mr. Simmons’ 1975 trial that numerous witnesses saw him playing pool in Louisiana at the time he was accused of robbing and murdering a store clerk in Edmond. Mr. Simmons, now age 71, is fighting stage 4 liver cancer. His lawsuit claims against Oklahoma City and a retired city detective are still pending.
