Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel is the most famous woman in the history of fashion, and one might legitimately wonder whether there is anything new to be said about her. Yet, ironically, the myths surrounding Chanel have actually concealed her true significance.

Chanel herself was responsible for much of the mythology that surrounds her life and career, since, in the course of her long life, she ‘wove such an elaborate tissue of lies about herself. . . that hard facts are . . . hard to come by’.¹ As a result, much of the enormous body of literature about Chanel more closely resembles hagiography than history. Even when scholars have attempted to separate fact from fiction, their essentially biographical approach has limited the nature of their inquiry. By placing Chanel back in her historical context, however, we may obtain a more accurate picture of her contributions to modern fashion.
