DeBarge
American R&B, soul and funk musical group
DeBarge was an American musical recording group composed of several members of the DeBarge family. In addition to various solo projects completed by members of the family, DeBarge was active between 1979 and 1989. The group originally consisted of El, Mark, Randy, and Bunny. James joined the group a year later for their 1982 second album. Bobby joined in 1987, following the departures of Bunny and El.
DeBarge released six studio albums, four of them with Motown subsidiary Gordy Records. These albums included The DeBarges (1981), All This Love (1982), In a Special Way (1983), and Rhythm of the Night (1985). The latter became the group's best-selling album and contained the single "Rhythm of the Night", which hit No. 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100, making it their highest-charting single in America. In the mid-1980s, El and Bunny went solo and DeBarge was subsequently released from its contract.

Grand Rapids, Mich., March 10, 1955); Bobby DeBarge (b. Grand Rapids, Mich., March 5, 1956, d. Aug. 16,1995 in Mansfield, Ohio); El DeBarge, voc., keybd. (b. Eldra DeBarge, Grand Rapids, Mich., June 4, 1961); Marty DeBarge, voc. (b. Mark DeBarge, Grand Rapids, Mich., June 19, 1959).
When the DeBarge family grew to ten children, their father left them. They were, however, able to capitalize on their great musical talent. They started singing in the Pentecostal church, before brothers Bobby and Tommy became secular recording artists as members of the funk band Switch, which had a Top 40 hit in 1978 with,”There’ll Never Be/’ Hoping to piggyback on their brothers’ success, five of the other DeBarge children went to L.A. The R&B and soul music ensemble Debarge, named for their shared surname, comprises the children of Robert Louis DeBarge, Sr. from Chicago, Illinois, and Etterlene Louise Abney DeBarge Rodriguez, a singer from Royal Oak, Michigan. The seven brother and sister individual members of the ensemble are composer/lyricist Etterlene “Bunny” DeBarge, born March 10, 1955, composer/countertenor Robert Louis “Bobby” DeBarge, Jr. born March 5, 1956, vocalist William Randall DeBarge, born August 6, 1958, and percussionist/lyricist Mark “Marty” DeBarge, born June 19, 1959. Principal vocalist Eldra Patrick “El” DeBarge was born on June 4, 1961, vocalist James Curtis DeBarge was born on August 22, 1963, and pianist/vocalist Jonathan Arthur “Chico” DeBarge was born on June 23, 1966. After the separation of Debarge’s parents in 1974, the mother and children relocated to Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1975.
Debarge achieved success in the 1980s, starting with their debut album, The DeBarges, released by Gordy
