Pēteris Vasks (born 16 April 1946) is a Latvian composer.[1]
Biography
Vasks was born in Aizpute, Latvia, into the family of a Baptist pastor. He trained as a violinist at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, as a double-bass player with Vitautas Sereikaan at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, and played in several Latvian orchestras before entering the State Conservatory in Vilnius in the neighboring Lithuania to study composition with Valentin Utkin, as he was prevented from doing this in Latvia due to Soviet repressive policy toward Baptists. He started to become known outside Latvia in the 1990s, when Gidon Kremer started championing his works, and he now is one of the most influential and praised European contemporary composers.

Pēteris Vasks (* 16. duben1946Aizpute) je lotyšský hudební skladatel. Patří mezi nejuznávanější hudební skladatele pobaltských států.
Narodil se v lotyšském městě Aizpute jako syn baptistického duchovního. Do roku 1970 studoval hru na kontrabas na Litevské státní konzervatoři. V letech1963-1974 působil jako hráč na kontrabas v několika lotyšských symfonických a komorních orchestrech. V letech 1973-1978 studoval kompozici na Lotyšské státní konzervatoři u Valentina Utkina.
Zpočátku byl ovlivněný hudbou Witolda Lutosławského, Krzysztofa Pendereckého a Georgea Crumba. Přidává do svých děl prvky lotyšského folklóru. Za své skladby získal Pēteris Vasks už tri lotyšské státní ceny. V roce 1996 získal také Herderovu hudební cenu Nadace Alfreda Toepfera.
Vasks má též silné environmentální cítění a příchuť nenarušené či zničené přírody je možno nalézt v některých jeho pracích, např. Smyčcový kvartet No. 2 (1984).
