Jon Iwata Biography

Jon Iwata is the president of IBM's marketing, communications, and corporate citizenship division. This worldwide team is in charge of marketing IBM's product and service portfolio, as well as digital commerce, market intelligence, communication systems, and stewardship of the IBM brand, which is widely regarded as one of the most valuable in the planet. Jon and his team were responsible for the creation of IBM's "Smarter Planet" strategic plan, as well as the communication and marketing of Watson, the cognitive computing system that crushed the two best human competitors in the match of Jeopardy! Ginni Rometty, President, Chairman, and CEO, reports to Jon. He is a participant of IBM's Operating Team, which is in charge of day-to-day market execution, as well as IBM's Client Experience Team, which is focused on making different customer experiences systemic all over IBM. Bio

Jon Iwata is Executive Fellow at Yale School of Management, an appointment he received upon his retirement from IBM in 2018, capping a 35-year career with the company. His work at Yale is focused on understanding how business leadership is evolving in the era of stakeholder capitalism. Jon is Executive Director of the Data & Trust Alliance, a consortium formed in 2020 by leading companies to develop and promote responsible data and A.I. practices and policies. 

Jon reported to three IBM CEOs during two decades of significant transformation of the information technology industry, global business and geopolitics. As IBM Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Jon led the company’s global marketing, communications and corporate citizenship organization for a decade. According to Interbrand, IBM became the second most valuable brand in the world during Jon’s tenure as CMO.
