In 1977, when she was almost eighty, the Government of India finally decided to award Janaki a Padma the fourth-highest civilian award; a terribly belated recognition for the first Indian woman to be awarded a doctorate in the botanical sciences, the first woman to head a central government institution of science, the only Indian female presence at landmark Indian historian (born 1968) J. Devika Jayakumari Devika (Malayalam: ജെ. ദേവിക, born 6 May 1968) is a Malayali historian, feminist, social critic and academic from Kerala.[2] She currently researches and teaches at the Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram as a professor.[3] She has authored several books and articles on gender relations in early Kerala society.[4] She is bilingual and has translated both fiction and non-fiction books between Malayalam and English. She also writes on gender, politics, social reforms and development in Kerala on publications like Kafila, Economic and Political Weekly and The Wire.[5] Devika did her Master of Arts in Modern History (1991) from Centre for Historical Studies, Jawah J Devika is a feminist researcher and teacher at Centre for Development Studies, Kerala, who has contributed to the understanding of the history of gender, development, politics, and culture of modern Kerala. Her work is interdisciplinary and she brings to bear her training as a historian on contemporary issues. She is interested in opening up the boundaries between academic and public and pedagogic discourses, the social sciences and humanities, and English and Malayalam..
